IRISH music and arts fans will descend on Co Laois this weekend for Electric Picnic.

Now in its 15th year, almost 60,000 people are expected to attend the three-day festival, which this year will be headlined by The Strokes, The 1975, Florence + the Machine, The 1975 and Hozier.

Among the acts who last night took to the stage of the festival were 17-year-old singing sensation Billie Eilish and one of Ireland's newest music stars Dermot Kennedy.

Freya Ridings will be performing tonight, while legendary singer Bonnie Tyler will perform on the Electric Ireland throwback stage.

As well as music, there's an array of theatre, comedy, holistic health and art on offer at the festival, which is held at 600-acre Stradbally Hall estate.

Previous years has seen acts such as Bjork, Fatboy Slim and Arctic Monkeys perform.

However, Gardaí yesterday revealed that drugs had been seized within minutes of the festival gates opening on Thursday.

Cocaine, Ketamine, LSD, MDMA were among the illegal substances uncovered during searches.

In a post on social media, gardaí included a photograph of how revellers had concealed the drugs in various items including inside a bottle of Lynx bodywash.

"Gardaí are carrying out searches and are reminding people attending that any seizures made will have consequences for the individual," a spokesman said.

"Keeping people safe and free from harm is important."

The Republic's Health and Safety Executive has also warned festival-goers to avoid mixing drugs with alcohol, as well as mixing different types of drugs.
