AN Irish drilling firm has discovered gold in the hills of Co Cavan.

Conroy Gold and Natural Resource said the drilling of 'scout holes' at Slieve Glah to confirm the presence of gold ore is a "solid starting point" for further exploration.

The find comes as Canadian mining company Dalradian Gold revealed it was dropping plans for cyanide processing of gold ore in Co Tyrone.

It hoped to build a plant at Greencastle which would use the chemical to remove gold from ore mined nearby, but said this week it would instead be treated "overseas".

Campaigners have vowed to continue their opposition to the gold mine.
