AN 81-year-old Catholic priest killed in a hit-and-run incident in Co Roscommon has been described as "very popular" among parishioners.

Fr Michael Guckian died following the collision in Keadue at around 11pm on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene, where the driver of the vehicle failed to remain.

A 20-year-old man later presented himself to Garda in Carrick-on-Shannon in connection with the incident.

Originally from Co Roscommon, where it is understood he was visiting family at the time of his death, Fr Guckian was based at Mary Immaculate Parish in Inchicore, Dublin.

Sinn Féin councillor Daithi Doolan said: "It's very sad, he was well-known and very popular in the community."
