AN Oscar nominated director has expressed an interest in the film rights to the story of the love rival murder of popular DJ Bobby Ryan, also known as Mr Moonlight.

Earlier this month Patrick Quirke received a life sentence for the murder of the Tipperary father-of-two in a case that gripped Ireland.

Jim Sheridan, who directed the film The Field, told the Sunday Independent that he had sat in the public gallery throughout several days of the case, which was the longest running murder trial in the history of the state.

Quirke (50) of Breanshamore, Co Tipperary pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Ryan whose body was found in an underground tank on the farm owned by widow Mary Lowry and leased by the accused.

The Dublin trial attracted unprecedented media interest with evidence detailing the love triangle between the two men and Ms Lowry, who gave compelling testimony to the court about her relationship with both men.

Mr Sheridan said he felt the case would make a "very interesting documentary".

"I was there in the court a few times. I didn't really want to pursue the family because I know everyone will be pursuing them, but I think it would make a very interesting documentary.

"If the family approach me to see if I could do anything on it then I would," he added.
