An ex-priest who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting children in Donegal died at the end of last year but the Catholic Church authorities were not informed, RTÉ has reported.

Former priest Eugene Greene pleaded guilty to 41 counts of sexual assault on 26 children in Donegal between 1965 and 1982.

RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta reported today that Greene died at the end of November, but that Church authorities were not informed of his death at the time.  He was 91-years-old.

Greene was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2000 and was set free in 2008.

It is not known where he died but it was reported that he was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.

It is understood that the Raphoe Diocesan Office will be contacting Greene's victims in the next few days to inform them of his death.

Bishop of Raphoe, Alan McGuckian, declined to comment to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
