THE magic of the silver screen could be making a return to south Donegal after an absence of more than 20 years.

Plans have been submitted for a new cinema complex in Donegal Town, with five screens, a restaurant and shop. It is one of the few major towns in the Republic without a cinema.

Northern Ireland firm WJ Dolan is hopeful that the project will go ahead following the re-zoning of land by Donegal County Council.

The cinema is already attracting support with more than 2,000 people joining a `We Want Our Cinema' Facebook page.

Yvonne Callaghan, who set up the page, said it was fantastic news that an application had been submitted.

Cinema backer, Willie John Dolan of WJD Construction said the closure of the town's picture house 20 years ago was a missed opportunity. He said the new "cultural hub" would be a huge benefit.

"We hope that then energy and commitment of local supporters is rewarded with the cinema they want," he said.
