GARDAÍ are excavating land in Milford, Co Donegal, in connection with the disappearance of Deirdre O'Flaherty (46) a decade ago.

The GP from Co Tyrone had been staying with her family at their holiday home in Moville and was reported missing on January 11 2009.

Three years after her disappearance, the High Court in Belfast ruled the Strabane woman was dead. The judge said he was satisfied Dr O'Flaherty had drowned after going into the sea. Her car was found at Kinnagoe beach which is around 50 miles from Milford where the searches are taking place.

The Donegal Divisional Search Team and Garda Technical Bureau are working with private contractors and the excavation is expected to last up to 5 days.

Gardaí said they are still treating Dr O'Flaherty's disappearance as a missing person investigation.
