A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car on St Stephen's Day, gardai have said.

The incident happened at Cleenrath, Aughnacliffe, Co Longford, at about 7pm on Wednesday evening.

The man aged 62 died at the scene. His body was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, for a post-mortem examination.

The driver of the car, a woman aged 44, was not injured.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out this morning by forensic officers.

Gardai in Granard are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them at Granard station or on the Garda Confidential Line.
