LORD Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring has helped launch the first parkrun to be held inside a prison in the Republic.

Progression parkrun takes place within the perimeter walls of Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

It becomes the fourth parkrun worldwide to take place in the grounds of a closed prison and follows Magilligan in Derry, which launched in January.

`The Joy' is a medium security facility located in the centre of Dublin and has the largest prison population in Ireland

It is hoped that participation will help facilitate rehabilitation, prepare prisoners for reintegration into society and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

Mr Ring, an independent councillor, is a regular parkrunner in Dublin.

"Governors Mullins, Walsh and all the lads looked after us brilliantly. Real progression," he said afterwards.
