The Republic will go to the polls to elect a president in October, the Irish government has announced.
Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy told RTÉ radio this morning that a formal order for the presidential election will be signed today.
Nominations will have to be submitted by September .
The election will take place on October 26.
President Michael D Higgins has said he will stand again. Sinn Féin have also announced they intend to put forward a candidate.
