A Co Donegal nightclub has removed a large billboard after complaints that it was offensive to women.

The advertisement for Libertys nightclub in Buncrana, which featured a picture of a woman golfer, was placed on the main road into the town from Derry.

Buncrana Sinn Féin senator Padraig MacLochlainn said he attempted to contact the owners over the weekend to express his concern.

“This large billboard sign on the approach to my home town of Buncrana is just plain offensive to women. And it is offensive to men who respect women in their lives,” he said.

“They need to cop themselves on, show some respect for our community and take it down."

Following growing criticism, the nightclub’s management removed the billboard yesterday.

No-one from Libertys was available for comment.
