A 40-YEAR-OLD man has died following a New Year's Eve knife attack in Co Cavan.

The man was attacked at around 11pm on Dublin Street in Ballyjamesduff.

Named locally as Marek Swider, he was originally from Poland but had been living in Cavan for more than a decade.

He was taken to Cavan General Hospital but died yesterday morning.

A post-mortem examination was scheduled to take place later yesterday.

Gardaí appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to come forward.

Meanwhile, four people were stabbed to death in a string of apparently unrelated murders in London during a 24-hour period.

Scotland Yard confirmed the male victims - a 17-year-old, 18-year-old and a 20-year-old on new year's eve, and a 20-year-old in the early hours of yesterday - all died as a result of their injuries.

A fifth man was in a critical condition last night after yesterday's stabbing.

Five men had been arrested in connection with one of the deaths, the Metropolitan Police said.

In Sheffield, two men were also critically ill last night after five people suffered stab or slash wounds in a fight at a Great Gatsby-themed party.

Police were called to Crystal Bar, on Carver Street in Sheffield, at around 2.20am yesterday following the altercation.
