THE man who blew up Nelson's Pillar in Dublin was a "committed republican right up until his last breath", his funeral has heard.

Father-of-seven Liam Sutcliffe (84), from Dublin, died on Friday of last week. His funeral was celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the city on Wednesday.

The republican, who took part in the IRA's border campaign of the 1950s but later joined fringe group Saor Éire, admitted he was the person who blew up Nelson's Pillar on O'Connell Street on March 8 1966.

In April, Mr Sutcliffe took part in anti-agreement republican party Saoradh's Easter Rising commemorations in Derry.

His son Mel told mourners on Wednesday that his father never regretted what he had done.

"He did what he believed in, what he felt was right," he said.

Mr Sutcliffe was buried at Mount Jerome cemetery in south Dublin.
