GARDAÍ in Inishowen are investigating an arson attack in which their own patrol car was set on fire outside a station.

A spokesman said an investigation into the blaze at Carndonagh Garda station at around 9.30pm on Halloween night was ongoing but no arrests have been made.

Sinn Fein councillor Albert Doherty said flammable liquid was poured over the vehicle and set alight.

“I don’t know if there were any gardaí in the station at the time but I’m presuming they were nearby," he said.

“This was a despicable attack. It happened between two residential areas. Whoever did this showed no concern for the consequences for local people or, indeed, for themselves."

Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue also said the arson attack was “exceptionally disappointing”.

“The incident was caught early so I think damage was pretty limited but it could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t caught early."
