The man, who has been named as Noel Maguire, was shot in Lazaro Cardenas in the state of Michoacán in the south-west of the country.

The circumstances around his death remain unclear but it is understood Mr Maguire was travelling in the area with his partner, who is thought to be American.

According to reports, two men attempted to rob the couple at a petrol station.

Mr Maguire was shot trying to defend his girlfriend. Their car was also stolen.
