A mother has been arrested in connection with the death of her toddler son.

Gardai said the woman, aged in her forties, was being questioned at Crumlin station in Dublin and she can be held for 24 hours.

The woman was detained following the death of her three-year-old boy who was found with stab wounds in their apartment in the Riverside complex on Poddle Park, Kimmage, in the south of the capital on Monday night.

The mother had undergone emergency treatment in St James' Hospital after being found with serious injuries in the apartment with her son.

The Garda press office said the child's death is being treated as a homicide and investigating officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They urged anyone who was in the area of Poddle Park over a period of more than 24 hours from 5pm on Sunday until 7pm on Monday when the alarm was raised to contact them at Crumlin station.

Tributes including cuddly toys, a teddy bear, candles and flowers have been left at the gates of the complex since the incident.

Gardai said the woman was being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
