A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy has died after a stabbing at an apartment block in Dublin.

The child was found with suspected knife wounds when gardaí were called to the Poddle Park area of Kimmage in the south of the city at around 7pm yesterday.

Detectives said they were treating the death as a homicide.

A woman, aged in her early 40s, was also injured and was last night in a serious condition at St James' Hospital.

It is understood she also suffered stab wounds.

Gardaí were said to be following several lines of enquiry.

A spokeswoman said last night: "Gardaí in Crumlin are investigating a homicide of an infant child (male).

"The state pathologist has been notified and the Garda Technical Bureau bas been requested to examine the scene.

"The scene is currently preserved. An incident room has been established at Crumlin Garda Station."

Sinn Féin councillor Ray McHugh expressed shock at the news.

“It’s a terrible tragedy to strike the area. The innocence of a three-year-old little boy to have his life taken in such a shocking manner is unspeakable."
