Two men have been arrested after explosives were found during a Garda probe into the activities of dissident republicans.

Heavily-armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit and the Special Detective Unit forced a car to stop on Spring Garden Street in Ballybough in Dublin's inner city at around 6pm yesterday.

Gardaí discovered suspected detonators and Semtex.

The area was cordoned off and the Irish army bomb disposal team were called in to make the explosives safe.

The two men were being held at Clontarf Garda Station last night. They are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act and can be questioned for up to three days.
