Tayto Park has applied for planning permission to build a 250-bedroom hotel.

The theme park, near Ashbourne in Co Meath, revealed plans for a 32,000 square-metre, seven-storey building which would cater for up to 1,000 guests.

The hotel, to be built with wood to match the look of the nearby park, will also include a spa, meeting rooms and three restaurants.

It is estimated the project would create 150 jobs during construction and 272 full and part-time jobs once completed.

The number of visitors to the park, situated off the main Derry-Dublin road, rose to more than 750,000 last year.

It is estimated that a quarter came from Northern Ireland.

The theme park includes a range of rides including a wooden rollercoaster as well as an on-site zoo.
