ELEVEN people, including three children, have been rescued after a suspected arson attack in an apartment block.

The blaze is believed to have started in a suite of furniture which had been left on a landing on the third floor of the Gleann na hEorna complex in Tallaght, Dublin.

Gardaí said officers were investigating a complaint of criminal damage.

The entire block was evacuated after the alarm was raised between 1.30am and 3am, including some residents being taken off a balcony on the side of the building by Dublin Fire Brigade.

The apartment block is just off Cookstown Way in Tallaght and a short distance from The Square.

Dublin Fire Brigade said six people were treated in hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation but none were believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

Fire crews from Tallaght, Dolphin's Barn, Rathfarnham and a unit from Tara Street with a turntable ladder were dispatched after a number of 999 calls were received.
