A 77-YEAR-OLD woman has been shot in the leg during an attack at her home in south Co Dublin.

The great-grandmother, named locally as May Browne, was shot as she answered a call to her home at Oliver Plunkett Avenue in Monkstown at 11.20pm on Thursday.

When she opened her front door a lone gunman did not speak but opened fire with a handgun, hitting her in the left leg. He then ran off.

She was in the house with an adult grandson and a six-year-old great-grandson when the attack took place.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who was in the area between 9pm and midnight and who might have information about the shooting to come forward.

They said they did not believe the pensioner was the intended target of the shooting

The woman was treated in hospital for her injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening

Forensic specialists are examining the scene and two shells have been recovered.
