WATER charges look set to be scrapped in the Republic following a landmark report from the Oireachtas Water committee.

The committee decided to scrap charges, approve refunds and to reject mandatory metering of new builds.

The draft report is to be formally approved today and will later be debated in the Dáil.

The report will be seen as a failure for Fine Gael, which heads the Republic's minority government, after it lost several attempts to introduce a charge for excessive use of water.
