Donegal hospital has highest alcohol admissions in Ireland
DONEGAL's main hospital had the highest number of alcohol-related emergency admissions in Ireland over the last five years.
More than 1,000 people were admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital with alcohol problems between 2011 and 2015, more than Dublin's largest hospital, the Mater.
Kieran Doherty, chief executive of the Republic's Alcohol Forum, said there is a huge alcohol abuse problem in Ireland.
"We know that drinking too much often causes damage to our physical and mental health and we’re also recognised in Ireland as being among the top binge drinkers in Europe so it’s no surprise."
He said measures must be adopted locally and nationally if problem drinking is to be addressed, including legislation to address the availability of alcohol and pricing and marketing of drink.
Mr Doherty said: “The damage caused by alcohol is not just physical but also in terms of the impact on road accidents.
"Four out of every 10 road deaths are associated with alcohol and up to 70 per cent of all suicides, there’s an alcohol component linked to them.”
