RESIDENTS of Crosshaven, Co Cork are gingerly awaiting the 2016 Irish Redhead Convention.

The convention, now in its seventh year, is a ‘ginger extravaganza’ featuring thousands of redheads.

This year’s festival, which runs from Friday August 19 to Sunday August 21, will see the seaside village play host to events ranging from carrot tossing championships and seminars on ‘redhead history’ to ginger speed dating and live music on the Foxygen and ElectRED Picnic stages.

A flurry of redhead competitions will also be held to discover who has the reddest eyebrows and the world’s greatest ginger beard, following by the coronation of the new ‘King and Queen of Redheads.’

Festival organisers also hope to set a world record for the largest redhead ceili dance, with music accompanied by a traditional band called Ginger Nutz.

The festival raises vital funds for their charity partners the Irish Cancer Society. The festival organisers encourage all their “fair and freckled friends” to be SunSmart by seeking covering up, seeking shade and wearing lots of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or above.

Twenty per cent of all ticket sales will be donated to the Irish Cancer Society who provide cancer care, research and support in Ireland. To date the Convention has raised over €30,000 for the national charity.

Joleen Cronin, festival founder said she was really exciting about the “unqiue Irish gathering of redheads from across the globe.”

“It is a coming together of friends new and old. I love that we all share common experiences as redheads and there is an understanding and camaraderie as we all stand together,” she said.

“For once we are the majority in the crowd and to be a part of that is an incredible, fun, empowering and life-changing experience.”
