Woman escapes serious injury after pier plunge

A YOUNG woman believed to be from Co Down escaped serious injury after her car plunged off a pier in Co Louth yesterday morning.

The black car went down the slipway near St John's Castle on the main Carlingford to Newry road at about 9.30am.

The car slid into the water but the woman, understood to be from Warrenpoint, Co Down, managed to open the driver's door and escape.

She was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry for treatment.

The Fire Service, police and paramedics attended the scene.

The accident came after five members of the same Derry family died when their car slid off Buncrana pier and entered Lough Swilly on March 20.

Her four-month old daughter Rionaghac-Ann survived after she was rescued by passer-by Davitt Walsh.
