A MAN who was shot by a lone gunman in Dublin's city centre has died, Gardi have confirmed.

Gardai said the victim - believed to be in his mid-fities - was hit a number of times as he walked along Bridgefoot Street in the Liberties area of Dublin just after 4pm.

A lone gunman carried out the attack, shooting the man several times as he approached him at Bridgefoot Street.

A firearm was recovered close to the scene by Gardaí and will be forensically examined.

Gardai said the injured man was taken to St James' Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A silver Mercedes car, believed to be the getaway vehicle and driven by a second man, was later found burnt out at Spitalfields, close to Carman’s Hall, Dublin 8. Gardi has preserved it for technical examination.

The car had been stolen earlier from the Navan Road on Thursday.

An incident room has been established at Kevin Street Garda Station and a Garda Family Liaison Officer has been appointed in this case.

Superintendent Patrick McMenamin from  Kevin Street is appealing for witnesses.
