GARDAI shot a man in the face during an overnight operation, the force's official watchdog has said.

The victim, aged in his 30s, is said to be in a stable condition after the incident near Foynes, Co Limerick.

The Garda Ombudsman said it has opened an investigation to establish the circumstances of the shooting. The incident happened at about 2.30am on Wednesday.

A "planned Garda operation" was ongoing at the time, the watchdog said.

The shot man was taken to hospital and his condition is reported as stable, a Garda Ombudsman spokeswoman added.

"Investigators have been deployed to the scene and an investigation is ongoing," she said.
