RTÉ has appointed its first female director general, Dee Forbes.
Ms Forbes, who is head of the Discovery Channel in northern Europe, will take on her new role later this year after a transition period.
Outgoing director general Noel Curran will leave his post at the end of this month.
Originally from Drimoleague in west Cork, Ms Forbes is the first director general in almost 50 years to be appointed externally.
Moya Doherty, chair of RTÉ's board, said: "I am delighted to have someone with such a breadth of industry experience, such a creative and visionary understanding of the global broadcasting market, and a proven management record".
Ms Forbes said leading RTÉ is the "opportunity of a lifetime".
