BOMB parts and ammunition linked to dissident republicans were found near the border in Co Louth.

Parts of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and ammunition were discovered during intelligence-led searches at Jenkinstown.

The Irish army's bomb disposal team were called in to examine the find.

It is understood the haul is linked to the dissident merger group calling itself the 'IRA'.

Gardaí said the searches focussed on a house and land in the area.

Garda officers, a dog unit and members of the Garda's Special Detective Unit were involved in the searches.

The find comes less than a fortnight after assault rifles, handguns, mortars, detonators and other bomb parts were found in a huge weapons dump in Co Monaghan.

The weapons, found at Scotstown less than half a mile from the Fermanagh border, were siphoned off by former Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt after he split from the Provisional IRA in 1997.

More recently the guns have fallen into the ownership of the 'IRA'.

McKevitt, of Blackrock in Co Louth, was convicted in 2003 of directing terrorism and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

He distanced himself from the RIRA while in jail and is no longer linked to any dissident or political grouping.
