Second fisherman dies in County Donegal

A fisherman who tried to save a crewmate after he became overcome by fumes has died.

Joel Alma (46) died at Letterkenny general hospital yesterday morning.

Mr Alma, who is from the Philippines, was overcome by fumes when he attempted to save fellow fisherman, James Joyce who collapsed while working on a trawler berthed at Killybegs, Co Donegal.

Mr Joyce, from Inishmore Island on the Aran Islands, died a short time later on Monday.

The two men had been cleaning the vessel's hold in preparation for a herring fishing trip when they became ill.
