A DUP special adviser has stood down from his council post after nine years.

Peter Martin, who works alongside education minster Peter Weir, confirmed he had left Ards and North Down Borough Council.

In 2014/15, he served as the last mayor of the former North Down Borough Council.

A business lecturer at Belfast Metropolitan College, he became Mr Weir's `spad' in February.

He will continue in that role.
