A daughter of former West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has been confirmed as a Sinn Féin candidate in this year's Donegal County Council elections.

Maria Doherty was ratified as a candidate for the Milford electoral area at a selection convention in Downings on Sunday night.

Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald attended the convention.

Ms Doherty has acted as as director of elections for Ms McDonald on a number of occasions and the party president told the convention she was a close personal friend.

She said Ms Doherty had been living in Dublin for many years but returned home to Donegal last year.

Ms Doherty's selection follows a similar move by the SDLP north of the border last month.

The party's Derry members selected barrister Mary Durkan, a niece of former SDLP leader Mark Durkan, to stand in May's local government elections to Derry City and Strabane District Council.
