SINN Féin is to report an alleged "one armed bandit" remark made to a disabled councillor to the Local Government Ombudsman.

Belfast city councillor Jim McVeigh last night said he would report Ulster Unionist David Browne after he allegedly referred to Sinn Féin's Ciarán Beattie as a "one armed bandit" at a meeting yesterday.

Mr Beattie lost his left hand after being accidentally caught up in an explosion during the Troubles.

Mr McVeigh called on the Ulster Unionist to withdraw his "vile" comment.

"In a Belfast City council meeting today, Cllr Davey Browne referred to Cllr Beattie as 'a one armed bandit' directed at the fact that Cllr Beattie has only one hand," he said.

"Sinn Féin will be reporting these comments to the Local Government Ombudsman.

"Someone should tell the UUP that this is the 21st century and that such comments are highly inappropriate. This type of abuse can rightly be deemed a hate incident and has no place in our society never mind being spoken by an elected representative."

Mr Browne was contacted last night but declined to speak to The Irish News.
