A LABOUR member has been expelled from the party for standing on a different ticket in the assembly election.

Donal O'Cofaigh is a Cross-Community Labour Alternative candidate for Fermanagh and South Tyrone.

He was expelled last week along with Labour Party in Northern Ireland (LPNI) activist Adam Gannon, who had been campaigning for him.

Labour said it is against its rules to be a member of another political party.

Mr O'Cofaigh is a former Sinn Féin councillor who stood as a candidate for the Socialist Party in 2011 before joining Labour last year.

He told the BBC he had wanted to run on an LPNI ticket this year, but the party does not allow candidates to stand in Northern Ireland elections.

Last year eight candidates broke ranks and ran under the banner 'Northern Ireland Labour Representation Committee'.

A Labour spokesman said: "Where there is evidence of a member being a member of another political party, that member will be auto-excluded."

Labour has launched a consultation process to consider whether it should contest future Northern Ireland elections.

It will involve discussing the matter with trade unions, the Irish Labour Party and the SDLP.
