BELAST Sinn Féin councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile will hope to make history today by being elected to the Irish senate.

If successful, the Short Strand representative will become the first member of his party based in the north to be selected to join the south’s upper house.

Selection to the senate involves a complicated voting process carried out across several panels made up of politicians, academics and former members of the house.

Counting of votes, which are cast by post, began earlier this week and already several Sinn Féin members have been successful.
