Former Belfast town clerk Cecil Ward dies aged 92

FORMER Belfast town clerk Cecil Ward has died, aged 92.

Born in 1929 and educated at the Belfast College of Technology, Mr Ward joined Belfast Corporation in 1947.

Over a career spanning over 40 years and encompassing some of the worst years of the Troubles, he rose to become Belfast City Council's highest ranking official.

After retirement in 1989, the council's Cecil Ward Building on Linen Hall Street was named in his honour.

Awarded a CBE, the late Mr ward was chairman of the Ulster Orchestra from 1990-94 and was co-opted onto the Queen’s University Senate in 1988.
