COVID cases are on the rise in the north, the Department of Health has warned.

New figures on the number of infections are due to be published tomorrow amid concerns of the jump is linked to Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5.

The variants were responsible for a second wave of Omicron infections in South Africa in May.

The most recent figures from the Public Health Agency show that the number of new cases rose to 2,547 in the week ending June 5 - an increase from 1,886 the previous week.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also showed that the rise in cases is affecting all age groups in the north.

According to the latest available ONS figures, in the week up to June 2 about one in 65 people in Northern Ireland were estimated to have Covid.

Hospital admissions due to Covid have also increased in the last fortnight but the numbers of severely ill patients has not risen.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said: "The vaccination continues to provide protection against serious illness and we urge all those eligible to get their spring booster."

The spokeswoman said Covid is still a public health concern and hadn't gone away.

"It is important that we all continue to remember the steps we can all take to reduce our chance of catching Covid-19...: Meet outdoors if you can, if indoors aim for good ventilation, wear a face covering in enclosed settings with poor ventilation, maintain social distance where possible and remember to observe good respiratory hygiene."
