A MAN pictured in a video which mocked the murder of Michaela McAreavey has been sacked by his employer.

The man worked for by SJC Hutchinson Engineering Ltd, based in Kilrea near Coleraine.

It is understood he is a member of a Co Derry flute band.

Several other members of the same band were also pictured in the video.

The video, showing a group of people singing a song mocking the 2011 killing of Mrs McAreavey (27), daughter of GAA manager Mickey Harte, has drawn condemnation from all sides of the community.

The video was taken in Dundonald Orange Hall during a private event on the day of the Northern Ireland centenary celebrations on Saturday, May 28.

Members of Portadown Orange Lodge were among those present at the event.

Three members of the lodge have since resigned from the Orange Order after they were identified in the video.

The private function was open to bandsmen and lodge members, although it is understood some friends and family also attended.

Several people sang the vile song, whose lyrics appeared to be familiar to those who took part.

SJC Hutchinson said it had been notified of "highly offensive online social media content involving a staff member who has recently joined the company".

"As a family and a business, we strive to promote an ethos of dignity, respect, and integrity in everything that we do," it said.

"Whilst we cannot control what our staff do outside of work, we do expect our staff to act in accordance with our company values both inside and outside of the workplace.

"The content posted online is abhorrent, divisive and we unequivocally condemn such behaviour. It has no place in society and we will not tolerate such conduct by any member of staff.

"We have advised the staff member that his employment has been terminated with immediate effect.

"Our thoughts are with the Harte and McAreavey families at this difficult time and we commend them for the dignified manner in which they faced this matter.

"Hate can hurt, but never win."

The unconfirmed identities of a dozen people pictured in the video have been shared online.

They include a delivery driver and a young man who attended an integrated school.

Many of those named have since deleted their social media profiles.
