Police are treating as attempted murder a gun attack on a flat in Derry last night.

A shot was fired through the front door of the property in High Park as the male householder walked towards the door.

Police said several masked men, some of whom are believed to have armed with bars and poles, attacked the flat. Bricks and other missiles were thrown and windows smashed. The man was struck on the head by one missile which was thrown through a window.

It happened at around 10.30pm and police said they are treating the "despicable attack" as attempted murder.

The men had forced their way into the block of flats, damging the entrance.

"This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, who could have been seriously injured, or worse," police said.

The PSNI is appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area between 10 and 11pm last night to get in touch.
