A FORMER Ulster Unionist election candidate has left the party to continue her campaigning work.

Naomi McBurney, who stood for North Down in this month's assembly election, said she had resigned "to remove any perceived bias" in her campaigning.

Ms McBurney is a high-profile campaigner on social issues including lower school uniform costs and changes to the post-primary transfer system.

She was one of nine women who ran for the Ulster Unionists earlier this month.

Ms McBurney thanked voters and UUP members who had supported her.

"I am especially grateful to all those new party members who supported me during the campaign and councillor Carl McClean for his advice and guidance," she said.

"Not to mention all of those people who trusted me with their first preference vote. I will always be humbled by their belief in me."

She said she remains committed to her lobbying work, which includes highlighting the need for a childcare strategy and early intervention mental health services.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone across the political parties who supported or encouraged me over these past few months - I have made many good friends," she said.

"I hope to continue to connect with you and indeed work with many of you in the months and years ahead as we strive to make Northern Ireland better for everyone."
