A 60-year-old man arrested by detectives investigating allegations of ill-treatment of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital has been released from custody pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS).

The man was arrested by officers from the PSNI's Public Protection Branch yesterday.

A total of 32 people have so far been arrested in connection with the biggest criminal safeguarding probe of its kind in Northern Ireland.

The Co Antrim regional hospital is also at the centre of a public inquiry.

Staff working at the hospital for adults with severe learning disabilities are alleged to have carried out physical and mental abuse as well as “wilful neglect” of vulnerable patients.

A total of 38 people have been told that they are to be prosecuted in connection with the Muckamore probe.
