THE funeral is due to take place on Friday of Co Armagh woman Maria McShane, who has been remembered as a woman who fought "to her dying breath for justice for her son".

Tributes have described Mrs McShane from Keady, who died peacefully on Monday, as a "tireless advocate for truth and justice".

The "devoted grandmother" had twice been a victim of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. When she was 18 and pregnant she was seriously injured in a bomb attack.

Two people were killed in the blast at the Step Inn bar in Keady in August 1976.

Mrs McShane lost her right eye after a large piece of metal shrapnel had lodged in her head and there had been fears for her unborn baby.

She later gave birth to a baby boy called Gavin, but in May 1994, he was shot dead by loyalists

The 17-year-old was murdered by the UVF along with his friend Shane McArdle as they stood in a taxi depot.

The killer, who was not masked and was linked to the Mid Ulster UVF, shot both teenagers once in the head as they played a computer game in the depot at Lower English Street.

Mr McShane died at the scene, while his friend - also aged 17 and from Markethill - died the following day.

Following her son's murder, Mrs McShane led a campaign fighting for justice in his name.

In December 2021, it was announced that the McShane family were to sue the PSNI, Ministry for Defence and Secretary of State amid claims of state collusion.

The Justice for Gavin McShane Facebook page described Mrs McShane as a "tireless advocate for truth and justice into the murder of her son Gavin.

"They are both now together," it said.

"Maria was an inspiration to many families who embarked upon that lonely journey".

In a tweet, Relatives 4 Justice said it had been left "absolutely heartbroken" by Mrs McShane's passing.

"Maria led by example," it said.

"She fought day and night and to her dying breath for justice for her son Gavin.

"Following his brutal murder she campaigned for justice, knowing there was state collusion in his killing.

"A Gael and a dedicated GAA woman she was known up and down the country and even visited the White House. She supported other families and encouraged other mothers who also lost their children."

WAVE Trauma Centre described Mrs McShane as an "articulate, caring and compassionate mum, who campaigned endlessly for justice following the callous murder of her son Gavin.

"She touched the lives of all including President Clinton and the First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton".

Mrs McShane's funeral is due to take place at St Patrick's Church, Keady at 10am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
