A DRIVER has been arrested after a car came off the M1 motorway in a collision on Saturday.

Police released images of the vehicle as it lay in an embankment at the westbound stretch of the motorway close to Lisburn.

The collision occurred shortly before 9.45pm and police arrived to find the car had "came to rest in the undergrowth".

The driver, who was not seriously injured and who police says does not reside in Northern Ireland, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit.

"Unfortunately the avoidable actions of this driver not only tied up a vital ambulance crew for a number of hours but also a vital response police callsign that has had to remain all night in the hospital with this driver," the spokesperson added.
