AN Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) assembly election candidate has said he is “disgusted” after claims that election workers were stopped and searched by police.

Dan Murphy, pictured, claimed members of his team were singled out as they put up posters on Springfield Road in west Belfast on Friday.

He said that in a separate incident the same day a party member who was delivering election leaflets and registration forms was also stopped and his car was searched.

Footage and pictures of PSNI officers appearing to search a vehicle were later posted on Mr Murphy’s Facebook page.

He accused police of interfering in the democratic process.

It is understood the IRSP, which is contesting an assembly election for the first time, intends to raise the issue with the Electoral Commission.

The PSNI was contacted.
