A DUP councillor who appeared to 'like' Facebook comments describing his own local authority as a "Provo" and "IRA council" has been referred to a standards watchdog.

Mid Ulster councillor Clement Cuthbertson has been urged to distance himself from the controversial comments made on his Facebook page last month.

A spokesman for the Local Government Commissioner for Standards last night said a complaint has now been received.

"We have received a complaint that a councillor in Mid Ulster District Council breached the Local Government Code of Conduct," he said.

"The complaint is now being assessed.".

They comments were posted after Mr Cuthbertson put up details of a motion calling on the council to write a letter of "congratulation and best wishes" to Queen Elizabeth to mark her platinum jubilee.

In response a member of the pubic wrote "no doubt the Provo council will block it", which in turn appeared to be liked by the DUP councillor.

The motion was later defeated and Mr Cuthbertson took to Facebook to voice his disappointed.

This post drew another response from the same member of the public which read: "Simple fact is this IRA council will block anything that any unionist will suggest", a comment which was also appeared to have been liked by Mr Cuthbertson.

SDLP councillor Malachy Quinn has called on the DUP man to distance himself from the comments.

"This needs challenged and councillor Cuthbertson needs to distance himself and this council from these comments," he said.

The DUP was contacted.
