An SDLP assembly member has said he will not be deterred after a protest was held at his office by hardline republicans.

Justin McNulty spoke out after members of Saoradh picketed his offices in Newry last week.

Those taking part held anti-PSNI banners including one that read "end PSNI harassment".

Protesters say they also pasted posters on the walls of Mr McNulty's office and later made their way to a nearby PSNI station.

Mr McNulty last night said he will continue with his work.

"My team and I are entirely focused on working for and standing up for the people and communities I represent," he said.

"The SDLP will not be deterred from doing that by anyone - we never have and we never will.”

In a statement Saoradh spokesman Stephen Murney was critical of the SDLPs approach to policing.

Mr Murney claimed that "republicans and their families including children, are being tortured and harassed every day of the week by these forces".

"All of this has been well documented but the SDLP and the rest of the political parties elected representatives instead choose to ignore it," he said.

He added that "more radical action will take place in the coming weeks and months".

Last Thursday, Derry based SDLP assembly member Sinead McLaughlin was forced to evacuate her office in the Spencer Road area of the city after a hoax bomb alert.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood condemned the threat as a "despicable attempt to intimidate and stop a tireless public representative from doing their job".
