THERE have been calls for calm in a Co Derry town after a man was shot it the leg in an attack being linked to republican paramilitaries.

The victim was targeted in the Finvola Park area of Dungiven at around 9pm on Tuesday.

Police say the man was shot through the door of the property although sources have suggested several men entered the property before the shooting.

Sources have linked the attack to the INLA.

The victim was later taken to hospital for treatment.

It is understood the shooting may be connected to a series of incidents in the north Derry area in recent months.

It is believed a relative of the victim was targeted with a pipe bomb attack last year.

Sinn Féin councillor Kathleen McGurk said people were taken aback by the latest attack.

"There's a sense of shock that this is happening in a quiet area," she said.

"There are a lot of young families in there and it's very concerning this sort of activity is going on in the Dungiven area.

"We understand this may be related to other incidents in the wider area in the last couple of months."

Ms McGurk urged those involved in any disputes to take a step back.

"We are appealing to people to calm this down.

"There are other people in the area who could be hurt, injured or worse."

East Derry MLA and former Stormont justice minister Claire Sugden condemned the shooting.

“Another report of gun violence is suggesting this kind of crime is not going away, she said.

“More must be done to address shootings and to support communities against this type of control.

“Communities don’t want this kind of violence on the streets of their homes.

"It is vital that every resource possible is provided to them so that the spectre of criminality such as this is erased from the lives of normal people for good."
