A 28,000-strong bird flock is being culled in south Derry following the detection of a fifth suspected case of Avian flu.

Agriculture Minister, Edwin Poots said yesterday that two previous suspect cases - in a commercial poultry flock near Markethill in Co Armagh and in a duck flock in Coagh, Co Tyrone - have been confirmed as positive.

Four outbreaks of Avian flu have been confirmed so far in the north with the latest case in a boiler breeder flock in Ballinderry awaiting confirmation.

Mr Poots said the latest suspected flock was detected over the weekend.

Mr Poots called on the poultry industry to take further steps to help farm families and businesses take every precaution possible to protect their birds and their livelihoods.
