A MAN has been arrested following a stabbing in Co Down.

The incident in Newtownards is one of two weekend stabbings being investigated by police.

In what is believed to be a separate incident in Co Down, a male runner was attacked in the Stricklands Glen area of Bangor at around 8pm on Saturday.

An unknown man approached the victim from a wooded area, striking him on the head and attempting to grab his mobile phone.

When the runner resisted, he was stabbed in the abdomen.

The assailant, described as being approximately 6 feet tall and wearing a black puffa jacket, black tracksuit and a cap, ran off towards the beach area.

The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

A 22-year-old man was yesterday still being held in police custody in relation to Saturday's stabbing at Mill Street in Newtownards at around 9.30pm.

After receiving reports of an altercation, police arrived to find a man had sustained a number of stab wounds. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.
