ONE of three pups found abandoned in a ditch in Co Fermanagh has died.

The Labrador-cross pups were found by two members of the public in a ditch at Gortaree Road on Monday and taken into the care of the USPCA.

They were estimated to be just hours old at the time they were abandoned and still had their umbilical cords attached.

However, the animal charity last night said the smallest of the three pups had died.

A spokesperson for the USPCA said: "Unfortunately one of our three little miracle pups didn’t make it through the night.

"Despite the amazing efforts of our veterinary team, the smallest of the litter was very weak and his condition deteriorated rapidly.

"They were in such a bad way when first seen by our veterinary team - freezing cold, umbilical cord still attached and maggots festering in their wounds.

"We are devastated to have lost one of our pack but are doing everything in our power to help the survival of the remaining two pups.

"These two little fellas are much stronger today and their wounds are healing well."
